Byrne has long advocated remaining in the Big 12 and has not changed that position in my opinion. I believe A&M’s desire to join the SEC is entirely driven by its board of regents and by its fan base, which seems overwhelmingly supportive of leaving the Big 12. If that’s true, and Byrne now has little decision-making power, that would be a shame because he has been the best thing to happen to that school since it went co-ed. He has made one outstanding coaching hire after another, directed a comprehensive campaign to upgrade facilities and made A&M relevant enough to draw the attention of a league like the SEC. A&M would be crazy to run him off."
